Here is something we may be able to do with the letter. When you write you usually indent the paper with your writing. Are any of these ridges left in the document in the black areas? Or are they removed by the blackening.

Here is an odd little tid bit for you. One of the bones in your spine is named after a bird. The Coccyx or tail bone is named after a Cuckoo Bird. Not sure if it helps.
